needlepoint a cloudy sky with one thread

click for a full size picture

While there are many needlepoint canvases that have skies, I tend to shy away from them for a very simple reason. I prefer the sky when it is interesting, with many broken clouds.

I like the look of scraps of clouds and the many shades of white and blue you find in these skies. But stitching it? No way. It would be far too difficult to get those larger areas of color in a suitably random way.

That is until now.

I found this stunning color of variegated Mandarin Floss (M921) and on the card it looked to me just like those broken skies I love. In this thread there are two shades of white and two of blue.

I decided to combine it with a textured stitch (Nobuko) to stitch the sky of this ABS lighthouse.

It worked out exactly as I had hoped, the colors combine to make irregular clouds with slightly shaded blue skies.

Next time you want to make a cloudy sky reach for this thread and watch the magic!

Stitching the Cloudy Sky

The computer arrived back yesterday afternoon — that’s one bit of good news.

Most software on the old disk I either had copies of, my Mac guy put on it, or I could find on the Internet — more good news.

BUT the hard drive was almost completely trashed and so only one folder (the most important one) was recovered and much of it (the current stuff) was lost — that’s the first bad news.

Even more importantly, all my email was lost. And that’s how you can help. If you have written to me, if you paid for my upcoming kimono class, or if we have stitch guide business in process (i.e. you’ve paid a deposit) or if you were thinking about it, please email me. I don’t have anything at all.

Thanks for helping.

needlepoint for beginners stitch sampler project designed by janet perry

stitch sampler project

Needlepoint is one of those things that many people don’t know they would like. They think it requires too much patience, isn’t creative, or is something only stuffy old ladies do.

But we know better.

Needlepoint is exciting, creative, and relaxing. Instead of forcing you to be patient, it puts you into a wonderful relaxing zen state, giving you a mini-vacation. The canvas and the thread are a way for even people who have little artistic talent to be creative (I know, I’m their poster child). And needlepointers, being creative people aren’t either stuffy or old (no matter how old they are).

My free beginning email course for needlepoint is a wonderful way to introduce a friend or family member. It goes over all the basics, including types of needlepoint, tools, threads, and stitches. It has two projects and even will help you pick your first painted canvas.

Hundreds of people have taken this class and have learned needlepoint. It’s easy to sign up here.

three types of needlepoint shading are showcased in this kimono

Shading can add so much to a needlepoint canvas, but all too often it is considered an advanced technique. But thanks to the methods I’ve developed and this cyberclass, you’ll master three different kinds of shading.

Whether you want to shade in the traditional manner, with needleblending, shade with metallics, or shade using single-strand threads, this class will show you how to shade. Not only will you learn the technique, you will also learn what affects shading, when to use it and how to pick the best shades and colors for this technique.

My classes go beyond the page to include bonuses, alternate color and thread ideas and lively discussion of needlepoint topics. I’ve picked this project and made the class affordable so that you can learn the technique and succeed while making a lovely project. All participants are part of a Yahoo group where additional instruction, materials, and discussion happen.

The class, including the canvas from Patt & Lee Designs, is only $27.50. It uses floss, metallics, and a background thread of your choice for a delightful result, at a great price.

You can join the class now, through PayPal.

torah judaic needlepoint design free from craft stew

While Judaism has a long tradition of fine needlework, it’s not often I find great Judaic patterns available free on the Web.

Thanks two Denise over at Craft Gossip for writing about this wonderful Torah scroll in its case on Craft Stew. I can see it made fancy by using two shades of gold metallic for the edges, Very Velvet in a textured stitch for the scroll case, and maybe Whipped Chain Stitch for the letters.

Such a delightful piece!
