Just a quick update.

They are installing stuff today and tomorrow, so I have to have my table (and therefore my computer) moved away from the windows.

So I won’t be here much if you need me. I’m going to go stitch.

Right now sitting on my desk are lots of Christmas ornaments. One of them, Petei’s Alice
in Wonderland, could be a stand-up except for one thing – I can’t hide the hanger.

But finisher Susan Thompson has developed a unique solution for this problem. Her small
stand-ups can double as ornaments, or is it that her ornaments can double as stand-ups?

Anyhow, the back of the ornament has a button attached to it. When it’s not Christmas,
you can hide the hanger by looping it onto the button. It’s just the coolest idea!

Ornament or Stand-up?

The blog continues to have problems. They are behind the scenes, but they are there. For the next several days I will be tinkering while I try to figure out how to get this all straightened out.

I’ll keep you updated on progress, but if you see anything odd, let me know.

Petite Square Bargello Needlepoint by Liz Morrow

Petite Square Bargello Needlepoint by Liz Morrow

The marvelously talented Liz Morrow has released three new designs in her on-line shop. Needless to say, I’ve already bought the Bargello and am using it to try out some new threads.

And think of the possibilities for stitching the cat and the horse; you’d could even make it to match and animal you know.

lion sampler by Aliola

lion sampler by Aliola

Thanks and a tip of the hat to Denise at Craft Gossip for alerting me to these charming animals samplers from Aliola. There are links to the entire collection.

I just love the folk art, almost primative style of them. I can see them done as a set in a rough thread, maybe Pebbly Perle, linen, or Wildflowers and used as the basis to decorate a nursery or child’s room.

Aliola’s blog is in Russian, as are the names of the animals on the charts. but this just adds to their charm.

Design from Friends of Type

As I’ve said in the past, letters and typefaces can be a wonderful source of inspiration for needlepoint. But rarely have I seen anything that screamed “Needlepoint!” to me as much as this design from Friends of Type.

My DD sent the link to me. It’s called “Wake Up!” and is inspired by the faces of digital clocks. Click on the link to see it full size.

I could see it done in Blackwork, as needlepoint or as Cross Stitch, on black canvas or fabric of course. I’m not fond of working on black, but I’d make an exception here.

Easy Adaptation to Needlepoint

Hi Folks –

After 13+ hours of travel, I’m finally home. I’m way too tired to write anything very coherent but I did want to give you some ideas about the posts coming up:

  • a series about stitching clothing
  • a bunch of new book reviews
  • a series of surveys of state and city themed needlepoint
  • a series about choosing backgrounds

But first I’m catching up on some sleep!

I have to start out apologizing. Between the flu, a cold from hell, and allergies worse than ever, I didn’t get to this month’s Twinchies.

Now with tons of Bargello to stitch for the Maker Faire, I’m spending all my time, even Sundays, working on that.

So the Twinchies are going to take a vacation and resume in June.

Every year I set myself up with some needlepoint goals. They can be really well defined (the year I stitch and finished 100 projects) or vague (this year’s reduce the thread stash goal), but I always do it.

Most years I achieve my goal, some years I fail miserably. Such as the year I wanted to finish 3 UFO’s and finished none. Yep, zip.

I did not make my 100 needlepoint pieces goal, that was in 200 when I was still doing About.com and lots of the projects were small and for the site. But I did finish 95 (I’ve kept the list).

Many guilds have challenges with a specific goal on them. Sometimes they can be small, to start and finish one project during one year. Sometimes they are big, the person with the oldest or most UFO’s finished gets a prize.

So what are your needlepoint goals for this year?

Add a comment telling me your goals and I’ll sum them up in a post as soon as I get Internet access back.

needlepoint paris stitch

from Rittenhouse Needlepoint

Rittenhouse Needlepoint in Philadelphia has a series of posts on their blog about great stitches for needlepoint. The most recent is Paris Stitch, pictured here. This wonderful straight stitch is great both as a stitch for small spaces (use only one thread here) or as a stitch for a focal point (using two or more threads).

It has a wonderful rhythm both to view and to stitch.

One of the things I love best about Rittenhouse’s stitch of the week series is how easy they are to use for learning new stitches. The pictures of stitches are clear and show several variation and the diagrams are great. Creating a stitch sampler for yourself using these stitches ia a wonderful way to learn.
