Color can be so evocative of a time or a place. Think of the combination of deep ultramarine blue, gold, linen white and rusty red. Ancient Egypt, right?

Ot what about the terra cotta, black, and golden yellow of Greek pots?

This year’s needlepoint club, Color through the Ages, is going to go beyond the traditional color schemes to look at color combinations that refer to a specific time, place, or object.

Through charted Twinchies (2″square needlepoint) based on quilt designs, club members will explore color schemes typical not just of ancient times, but of the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Twentieth Century, along with others.

Each month you’ll get a PDF instruction packet with the chart, information about the color scheme and something about color of the time, and information about three different threads.

A continuation of 2011′s popular Color, THread, and Quilts Club, you’ll have a chance to expend and extend your knowledge with these delightful little pieces.

The club begins March 1, 2012 and registrations are open now. There are a number of different pricing options, depending on what you want.

Basic Package includes the PDFs of each month’s program. It is $7.50 per month. Use the PayPal button below to register.

stitch your stash around the world needlepoint by barbara bergsten, stitched by janet m perry

I’m hoping by tomorrow morning I’ll be finished with this piece. But I wanted to share a completed corner.

If you remember, I made my center too big and so I had to add two more rows in the corners. Since I didn’t want to repeat stitches, I chose new ones. The aqua is Triple Diagonal Brick and the pale coral **.

Then I added corners in the two aquas with each block four Scotch Stitches.

The border sides are two rows of Diagonal Gobelin in two of the corals. I had planned to do the two darkest shades, but I don’t have enough of the middle shade. As a result I’m using the lightest and darkest shades.

Then I’m finishing with two rows of Continental in medium coral and charcoal.

The whole thing will be inset into a pillow and will go into my bedroom which is coral. My original plan was to use these colors extensively in the new house, but our downstairs is done in much more vintagey colors of soft bluish green, true green, and buttery yellow, so these colors REALLY won’t go. But my bedroom is coral faces both East and West and has a nice corner for reading with bookshelves (soon), a chair and a chaise, a vintage table and a Spanish style lamp. This will be a perfect addition.

When I was looking for the video montage of "I'm not here to make friends" for my last post, I stumbled on this amazing post from our pal, Jenny Ryan, over on xoJane. Jenny shared the amazing work of fellow Los Angeles Modern Quilt Guild member, Alissa Rowinsky-Wright.

My socks are regularly knocked off my the work people bring in to these meetings. One guild member in particular, Alissa Rowinsky-Wright, also made me laugh my head off when she unveiled a project she has embarked on called the "I'm Not Here to Make Friends" series, an exploration of reality show "villains" as interpreted in thread-and-fabric.

She's captured favorite villains from Survivor and Top Chef, and has more in the works (including Gretchen from Project Runway!). Read more about Alissa's project from Jenny over on xoJane.

poinsettia needlepoint ornament designed by needlepoint expert janet m. perry

This bold;y graphic ornament is loosely based on a quilt block. Using all straight stitches and surrounded by a border of Straight Gobelins and Continental, this is a quick to finish project for the holidays.

I stitched mine on 18 mesh canvas using Kreinik 1/16″ ribbon (gold), Planet Earth wool (white), Gumnuts wool (green), and two of the new High Cotton colors (reds).

I made some changes from the chart. It’s charted for red, green, and gold. I took the green triangles in the center of each side and made them dark red. This gives the blossom some depth.

The border has one round of Straight Gobelin over three (remember to miter the corners), followed by a single row of Continental in green.

needlepoint twinchie patchwork quilt block gift tags, free needlepoint project by needlepoint expert janet m. perry

Get these free gift tag patterns at My 365 magazine's site.

These four almost Twinchie (34 stitches square) quilt blocks are really quick to stitch and can be finished quickly to make simple ornaments or gift tags.

They are stitched in colors to compliment the overdyed canvas colors, but any scrap of mono canvas will do.

I just love the bright bold look.

The patterns for the quartet are free and can be found in My 365‘s holiday issue, out today. The beautiful magazine is on-line and free.

As a part of the issue, I’m participating in a giveaway of my books. Visit the site to learn how to enter.

BTW to turn any of these into a true Twinchie, just add a one row “binding” in Continental as a border.

I found out about this wonderful quilting blog earlier this week, and I just love it.

Material Obsession is written by two Australian quilters who own a shop with the same name. They have also just published a book by the same name as well (on its way to me right now).

Every pot has tons of picture, mostly of quilts, but sometimes of blocks and sections of quilts, sometimes of people. What astounds me is how bright and creative they all are. I feel as if these ladies have taken all the vibrancy of Kaffe Fassett colorful quilts and needlepoint, internalized it and then gone on a taught others.

I’m in love with the vibrancy and the patterns. One recent quilt, a star block based on equilateral triangles has inspired me to make an ornament in Trianglepoint based on it. I’m still working on it, but I’ll show you and give you a chart when it’s done. And looking through, I found about a dozen more I want to adapt.

Even if you don’t love quilts, the vibrancy and color will brighten your day.

One final note, this site does not have an RSS feed, so if you use something like Google Reader, you’ll have to go to the site directly.

The first stash busters project

Sometimes I feel as if I’m surrounded by bad news. There are health problems, money problems, job problems, no job problems. And that’s just my friends and family.

If I look outside of myself the Post Office is going broke, we heading into another recession (did we ever leave the first), we’re going into election season (I hate political commercials), and baseball season (and the gentle background to my stitching) is ending.

All in all, I feel as if we all need a mood lightener and one that won’t rely on the Post Office or make me go out and buy things I don’t need.

So I’m debuting the Stash Busters Needlepoint Club. It’s a one-year club that will begin November 1, 2011 and run for one year. Each month you’ll get a new project designed to use up thread in your stash. In each packet you’ll get the pattern, information about the inspiration for it, a color [picture of the model, and instructions on how to finish the project.

Every one is designed to use up threads in your stash as well as your bits and pieces of canvas and every one you can finish yourself.

While many of the projects won’t need background threads, participants will have a chance (probably sometime in November) to order threads at a discount to be a unifying background thread for the pieces.

Each month you’ll get a new and exciting project, designed to create beautiful needlepoint with stuff you have on hand. The projects will be delivered via email in PDF format.

It will be tons of fun. The cost for the entire year is $35 however if you sign up for the club before October 15, 2011, your cost is only $30.

Click on the button below to join the club.

The Easiest Needlepoint Club Ever!

keyboard_cat_quilt.jpg

The world needs more cat meme quilts, don't you think? Thankfully, Cheryl Sleboda is happy to oblige. Her Keyboard Cat quilt follows up her wildly popular Nyan Cat quilt. I'm looking forward to seeing what she makes next! [via Mr. X Stitch]

billboard_quilt_along.jpg

Elizabeth of Oh, Fransson! is hosting another one of her popular quilt-alongs, and this time she's sharing how to make a really cool billboard quilt that displays any message you want.

I'm so excited about all the interest in the Billboard Quilt-Along! The concept of this quilt-along is to make a quilt with patchwork letters that communicate a message. The message can be serious or funny. It can be as long as a phrase, or as short as a couple of letters. It can be any size. It's up to you!

The quilt-along will cover designing your quilt top, designing a coordinating back, making and machine appliquéing patchwork letters, putting your quilt together, and finishing it with scrappy binding.

The quilt-along starts on August 8. For more details and supplies, see Oh, Fransson!
