I didn’t get nearly as much done (in any facet of my life) this week as I had hoped.

But still there are some new pages on All about Needlepoint.

There’s one new free pattern page, of Christmas Ornaments.

Then several content pages:

I expect that over the next three weeks adding new pages to the site will be slower, what with Christmas, my DH’s birthday and moving in the space of 12 days, but I will be letting you know about new things weekly.

I am so gratified that so many of you are finding the site. Let me know what you want to see!

All about Needlepoint Update

Kreinik‘s threads are so popular with stitchers (and many other people) and the free pattern section of their website has a ton of wonderful patterns on it for you to use to explore their threads.

The index page (the link above), organizes the patterns by category, with some patterns highlighted each month. Needlepoint has its own section, as does Plastic Canvas. When you click on a category, you go to a summery pages (or the first of several) that show a thumbnail of each project. Click on the “more info” link below the picture and you’ll go to the page for the project. These will have a larger picture, a material list, and instructions. At the bottom of the page there are instructions for printing the project out.

QR Code of basic information about this site

For almost as long as I’ve been doing needlepoint, I have loved geometric patterns which aren’t really abstract but are some kind of code. I like them so much I even have my Personal Plaid mini-sock which is, in effect, a code based on a name and a date.

This morning, while surfing the Web I came across QR Codes, which are the successor to bar codes. But they do so much more. There is a project to encode Wikipedia articles as QR Codes, people have made QR code scarves, cakes and even needlepoint.

I found a free QR Code generator and encoded the basic information about this site. That’s the tiny QR Code you see above. Here’s a link to a simpler QR code for Needlepoint.

I’m leaving it up to you to decide how to translate it into needlepoint. For myself, I’m going to do it in Mosaic Stitches, and I’m thinking about using Rainbow Gallery’s new Silk Lame or SoftSheen Fyrewerks. I may make it the front of a needlepoint tote bag.

If you make your own QR Needlepoint, send me a picture and I’ll tell the world.

I just wanted everyone to know about the new Website I’m developing — All about Needlepoint.

I’ve long been unhappy that as needlepointers, we don’t have available on the Internet the kinds of tools and information which is available for many other people who do needlearts. Quilters have a bazillion patterns, there is a huge community of knitters, and newly popular needlearts like free embroidery have many sites dedicated to them — but where is the reference information for people who want to needlepoint.

I have wanted to put the store of information in my head and on my computer out in the world and available to the public for a long time, but I couldn’t find a structure I liked. I put my mind to it and started working.

All about Needlepoint is designed from the outset to be for anyone who is interested in needlepoint from the just curious to the experienced stitcher. It’s easy to navigate, with no information more than two clicks from the home page. It’s designed to teach as well and there will be free email courses (the first one, for beginners, is taking sign-ups now), free projects and email projects (I’m working on those as well).

I put up a few pages everyday (I’m trying to eat the elephant), so check back often.

One new feature is “Ask Janet” a free service where you can ask a needlepoint question and get an answer back within one business day. I’m putting my expertise to work for you.

I want to revolutionize the needlepoint world, taking advantage of the Information Age and all its wonders. I’m hoping eventually to add features like Wikis (collaborative encyclopedias), a directory of free needlepoint patterns on the Internet (I’m figuring out how to do that), and needlepoint forums for discussion. We’ll have stitch-alongs and possibly swaps and exchanges.

In case you’re wondering, the blog will stay here and continue as it has been. Some of the material here which is reference will move over to All about Needlepoint at some point, largely to make it easier to find. And, of course, the free projects will be in the Directory. But this will continue to be the place to read news, reviews, learn about great needlepoint posts, and to track the latest information.

But I also want to know what you’d like to see. What bit of information do you always forget? What would you like to know? What technique do you want to learn? Email me at napaneedlepoint @ gmail.com (remove spaces) and tell me about it.

I’m looking forward to developing this site.

be stitched heart sampler for cross stitch or needlepoint

be stitched heart sampler

Don’t you just love this hearts sampler? Even though it is intended for Cross Stitch, can’t you just see it on open canvas? I can and keep picturing it in several colors of Kreinik metallics. If you didn’t want to stitch the whole thing, why not make one block on perforated paper and put it on a card as a homemade Valentine for next year. Or make it in cream and gold for a wedding card.

The designer is Be Stitched and the designer is Erynne. She is offering her designs free for non-commercial purposes (i.e. you can’t republish or sell).

Currently there are six patterns, all wonderful, available. A big thank you to Denise at Craft Gossip for pointing Be Stitched out.

color wheel needlepoint pillow from happy threads

Happy Threads design

Click on over to Australia’s Happy Threads needlepoint site for this charming needlepoint color wheel design. I love the bright colors and the rectangular shape is so useful. I’m thinking three of them in a row would be a great bookmark (maybe for Funk & Weber’s Bookmark Challenge?). You can also find instructions for finishing a bookmark at Happy Threads.

While you are there, be sure to check out her wonderful collection of free charts. If you like something print it out. Charlie has announced that each year she will remove many of the previous year’s chart and repackage the best of them into a book for sale in her shop.

It is so nice to find such great free needlepoint design.
