You probably think the word “diaper” refers to something babies wear, but it doesn’t. They are called diapers because the fabric often used for them had diaper patterns woven into it.

Diaper patterns are geometric patterns which have regular repeats in both diagonal directions. They also generally have regular repeats horizontally and vertically as well. But the diagonal repeat is what is critical here. So a stripe isn’t a diaper pattern (no diagonal repeat), but a check might be.

Many kinds of stitches, think of a block of Scotch Stitches, are diapered by nature. But in order to be a diaper pattern there needs to be come contrast in color as well. A background of Scotch in one color is not a diaper, but coloring the same block of stitches to look like gingham fabric does make a diaper.

The repetition is, I think, what makes diapers so lovely and compelling. Most diaper patterns are small, so that you can really see the repeat. I think the prettiest ones alternate two of more different repeats in a regular pattern.

In general diapers are usually small patterns and are abstract (though they don’t have to be).

Once you learn to recognize diaper patterns, you’ll start seeing them everywhere.

Oh and the baby diapers, the fabric often used for them was a pattern called Birds-eye, which has diamond units repeated all over. In fact when my kids were little 20+ years ago you could still buy cloth diapers with this pattern. Since it’s been awhile since I needed to do this, I don’t know if they still do.

There are a lot of things that you can do for fun on your own or with your kids. Crafts are fun ways to keep busy, satisfy a creative urge, and spend some great moments with friend or with your kids. Some crafts are messier than others, and some can last a long time.

More than once I’ve come downstairs to my craft area to see little fingerprints on the cardstock and a few missing stickers. I’ve found that by scrapbooking with my kids, I can teach them skills and techniques appropriate for their age level, and steer them towards the supplies that are perfect for little ones (in other words, NOT the three-dollars-a-sheet patterned paper!). Here are five mini-album projects perfect for a first-time scrapbook apprentice.

Here’s a sneak peek at one of the projects in the new Bargello book, a mitten. I love this little piece, it’s so soft and furry. It uses four shades from one family of Silk & Ivory
and a fifth color for the cuff. The cuff color can be a darker shade of the same color, or an accent color.

This is so easy to do that it’s a perfect first Bargello project. It is also so addicting, you’ll want to make tons. Since it can be stitched in about an evening, it also makes great Christmas gifts. If I didn’t have my kids’ ornaments for this year already picked out (and at the finisher), I’d be stitching them some with their namers on them. Come to think of it, maybe I will anyhow; it’s not as if I am completely overwhlemed with work (just 4 models which are here, more coming, stitch guides to write, and article due, and new designs to make…)

Today is Labor Day in the US and even though in most places the kids have been back to school a couple of weeks, it signals the traditional end of summer. We’re celebrating today by having a dinner party featuring a slow-cooked pork roast (recipe from the current issue of Cook’s Illustrated). You’re probably busy too, so I thought I would give you some tidbits of new things coming to whet your appetite.

The Pure Palette’s lovely silk thread, Baroque Silk, has new colors coming out. They are: Sunset, Camp Fire, Gravity, Malt, Old Gold, Dreamland, Mermaid, and Artisan. This company’s colors are always lovely, so I can’t wait to see them. If you like larger mesh (13 or 14) and want an easy-to-use silk, try Baroque Silk, it’s lovely and more shiny than Vineyard Silk. It is also easily split so it works well on 18 mesh too.

Amy Bunger is working on a new DVD, her ninth. A release date hasn’t been set, but it’s called Under Construction and will have stitches for buildings.

Awhile ago I reviewed Yvette Stanton’s book on left-handed stitching. She has now come out with the companion, Right-handed Embroiderer’s Companion.

Squigee has some new designs debuting later this month, a delightful Halloween series! Gail has blogged about several of them, including Witch Hazel. There are also some pictures of the new designs on her website.

News & Notes – September 2010

Although August is a month when most of us are consumed with vacations, staving off the heat, and getting the kids back to school or off to college, there are plenty of new needlepoint products out there.

Painted & Charted Canvas

DebBee’s Designs has added Turquiose and Kunzite (pale pink) to her Glitz & Glamor series. These projects are monochromatic in glorious shades inspired by gems. The charted projects use a variety of threads and stitches.

If you have ever wanted to try Or Nue (patterned couching over metallic), Brenda Kocher has a small beginner’s project available. The Or Nue butterfly is a perfect way to learn this technique with a small, stash-busting charted project.

dede Ogden has added a wonderful tropical blossom to her flowers series
dede also has some great new bags available. And (stash alert) Canvases Be Gone has a huge selection of dede’s designs that are being discontinued. It’s a great opportunity to buy these. I should know, I’ve gotten a bunch.

CBK Needlepoint Collections has added the charming artwork of Shari Beaubien to their line. These whimsical pieces (often of elephants on bright backgrounds) are on 13 mesh canvas. Canvas Candy has added a sub sandwich to their line, it comes with a blown glass sandwich, both including the pickle on top. They also have an adorable taco as well as many other items, all with ornaments.

Ashley Bradley has a wonderful New York City skyline sized to fit into a Lee’s Needle Arts bag. MAP Designs has a new line of frame weights, long and lean, the two I saw were and adorable striped cat and a cute dog with flowers. These could also be great stash busting projects. There are eight in all, including colorful hearts and funky flowers

Susan Roberts Designs had added a new shape to their 3-D ornaments — bells. There are 10 available and they join the domes and balls.

Threads, Finishing & Accessories

Fern Ridge Collections has a pre-finished purse flap that is inspired by puzzle pieces. It comes in a kit with Sullivan’s floss, specialty beads, and instructions. All you need to do is stitch. The finished purse fits Kindles, Nooks, or iPads.

Colonial Needle has added several new pieces to the Lee’s Needle Arts leather goods. There is a leather ebook reader, a gorgeous leather business tote (if I had that kind of life, I’d buy it in a second), a wonderful leather pillows.

Nordic Needle has mesh bags with mesh big enough for stitching. The mesh is white and is available in three sizes. You also have your choice of trim colors.
