internet

I’m leaving this morning to go to the TNNA Winter Market in Phoenix, We’re driving down.

Since I don’t have a laptop and don’t know what kind of Internet access I’ll have, my reports on new products will have to wait until I get back next week, starting on Wednesday.

But in the meantime, I have blog posts planned to drip in daily while I’m gone.

I’m really looking forward to all the great new things at TNNA.

Have you been to the Caron Collection site, Dyed and Gone to Heaven lately?

No?

Then go visit this superb, redesigned site. I am so completely impressed with its style I can’t recommend it enough.

The Caron Collection really embraced the possibilities of the Internet when they first did their site more than 10 years ago. It has tons of information, galleries, profiles, and free patterns of the finest quality.

But it wasn’t easy to navigate and often I found myself wondering where certain information could be found.

The new site showcases the information and products in a newspaper-like format. There are stories, with links, pointing you to new, larger, and greatly improved on-line color cards. The latest designer profile is summarized with a column and free projects as well as new products are showcased.

Across the top are buttons to the various parts of the site. These include information about products, each of the major divisions of information and two types of retail outlets. One is a shop locator for brick and mortar shops. The other is a list of mail order and on-line sources for those who do not have a convenient shop close by.

The free patterns have new larger pictures as well, so it’s very easy to find the project you want. There is a gallery of work by many talented people. And clicking on archives gets you to a nicely organizes text list of what it available.

You may only think of The Caron Collection when you think of threads, but the other areas of their line are now easy to find. Click on hand painted canvases to get a gallery page of the pieces, each listed with a thumbnail, name, and dimensions. Click on designs to learn about booklets. (There are several there I’ve been seeking.)

And if you can’t find what you are looking for, there is a search box, which uses Google to search this site (or the Web) to find what you need. The results come back in the familiar Google format so they are easy to use.

I’m so impressed and so happy, this is going to be a favorite stop.

iris needlepoint shading class taught by needlepoint expert janet m perry

I am so excited about the classes I’ll be teaching for Art Needlepoint over the summer. Each class will focus on a specific technique. They are offered exclusively through Art Needlepoint.

Best of all, the class is free with the purchase of the canvas and kit.

The first class, pictured here, is a basic shading class. It uses this charming Art Nouveau Iris and Needlepoint, Inc silks to teach needleblending, a technique for shading using stranded threads. It begins June 11.

Starting June 15 is Stitching the Impressionists with Shadow Stitching using a lovely watercolor of waterlilies by John LaFarge. The combination of this technique with the changing colors and textures of Impressionism will make for dynamic needlepoint.

Learning how to do effective shading with single strand threads is the topic of the class beginning July 1. It uses a contemporary shaded circle design and wool threads. This technique will free you to do shading on any canvas with any thread.

The lovely Flowers by contemporary artist Virginia Kelly will be combined with textured stitches and special effects in a class beginning July 15. In this class you’ll learn lots that you’ll be able to use on other projects while creating a lovely project that will make a great pillow or picture.

You sign up for any of these classes by clicking on the link and purchasing the kit.

The last class, Shading the Face, will begin August 1 and will use a lovely portrait of a girl by a Brazilian artist. You can read about the painting and the class in a blog post from Art Needlepoint. Please let them know if you are interested in this class.

All the classes are conducted over the Internet with lessons emailed to you, private discussion groups, and scheduled chats.

Hope you’ll join me!

I’m heading out this morning to Annapolis, MD for my youngest’s college graduation. I’m excited that the whole family will be there and that we have some delightful things planned.

But that does mean that until next Tuesday night, my Internet access will be spotty at best.

I have blog posts written to drip in later today and every day while I’m gone, but if you email me, you may not hear from me until next week.

When people think of crafting, they think of craft fairs in small towns, of mothers and grandmothers manning booths with hand-sewn clothing for American Girl dolls and beeswax candles and hand-knitted mittens and hats – and they’re not totally wrong. But these days, everyone is crafting. Thanks to the proliferation of “do it yourself” blogs on the internet and online interior design magazines, crafting is bigger than ever.
