Orna has been providing new designs from her My Family series that ran in Needlepoint Now several years ago. She has added this design to the collection available online.

It’s named for her husband Reid. You’ll love reading her blog post about how they met . And you’ll love stitching this vibrant piece.

She also has a materials pack available.

Color Kaleidoscope by Terry Dryden is CyberPointers upcoming on-line workshop

Several times a year CyberPointers hosts on-line workshops with national teachers. The upcoming workshop is with Terry Dryden and is pictured above. Here’s what the site says about it:
Color Kaleidoscope is a fresh interpretation of the twelve point color wheel. It is a fun way to learn more about complementary and analogous color schemes and ways to add more depth of color and texture to a design. Over 40 threads and beads are used, Four composite patterns are used throughout the design with each being stitched several times in different color combinations.. To add that extra bit of texture and depth, flat glass beads, large Delicas and cubes are integrated into the stitch patterns. The kit is included in the cost.

Proficiency Level: Intermediate
Design Size: 7 1/2″ x 7 1/2″
Kit Contents: #18 eggshell canvas with design drawn on the canvas. All required threads (silk, cotton, soy and metallic), needles, and flat and round glass beads are included in the kit.

So why am I telling you about it?

The piece is simply lovely and will teach you lots about color and stitches. The opportunity is open to anyone who wants to take it, whether an ANG member or not. The window for signing up is very short, registrations close July 29 and the workshop begins in October.

Just visit CyberPointer’s page for the class to get the pricing and to to sign up.

Here are even more great canvases from may designers. Most of these premiered at the TNNA Summer Market earlier this month.

Deborah Mix, the designer behind Dragon’s Tale has an equally talented sister, Christine, who is a children’s book illustrator. Deborah has adapted 8 of Christine’s fairytale illustrations to needlepoint canvas. These designs are full of great detail and they would fire any child’s imagination.

Canvas Candy, that great company that pairs needlepoint with blown glass ornaments in many styles has a set of four juvenile ornaments that include a rocking horse, a teddy bear, a piggy bank, and a baby duck. They also have some great retro canvases that include a biker jacket, saddle shoes, and a motorcycle. If you thought they just did food, look around — there’s lots more!

Amanda Lawford has many new designs, including a new Santa, lots of wonderful bugs, flowers, and animals, and new brick covers. There are also some whimsical dog and cat canvases. But my favorite of all is a cow jumping over the moon.

Renaissance Designs has two new series that are particularly fun. One, Frosty Friends, is colorfully dressed snowmen in 2.5 rounds. That’s a great size for using the self-finishing ornament items. There is also Heartfelt Thoughts. These are one-word thoughts inside colorful patterned hearts. The first 6 of a planned series of 12 are available.
Kelly Clark has added a series of figures and other canvases for Thanksgiving. She also has a simply glorious Wisteria topiary (along with three others), several “Please Come In” signs with different colors, decorations and backgrounds, and some delightful old-fashioned toy ornaments.

And in other needlepoint news, A Dragon’s Tale Needlepoint will be opening an Etsy store soon to sell discontinued and discounted canvases at savings of at least 50% off. Until the shop is open, you can email or call to get a price list of what’s available sent to you. Click on the link to their site for contact info.

I get questions all the time in my mailbox asking me to identify a vintage piece of needlepoint.

Usually it’s because someone did the piece, loved it, and would like to do something similar. Quite often, I can identify the designer (I’ve been stitching over 40 years) but the work is no longer published or the designer is long gone.

The best an most consistent source I’ve found for older pieces is ebay and you can use their saved searches tool to narrow down your search to exactly what you want. And get email notices when something is there so you don’t waste time looking.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Go to ebay and then the crafts category
  2. Under crafts, pick needlecraft & yarn and click on it
  3. This goes to a huge listing (over 350,000 recently), but in the left column, you’ll see needlepoint & plastic canvas, click on that
  4. This takes you to a large, but more manageable listing. Now it’s time to refine your search.

You want to do this here because many people list things in the wrong category, for example a canvas in patterns. Since many searchers will only look in the “right” category, you can get some good bargains this way

  5. Put the designer you want into the search box. Here are some tips for making this search better
    • Click on advanced next to the search box and use the advanced functions.
    • Use the designers last name only. We may always call her “Jane Doe,” but many people listing on eBay don’t know needlepoint, so “Doe” will find you better hits.
    • If it’s a painted canvas designer, use the name painted on the canvas. If that is the company, use that.
    • Advanced search has an option to find “any of the words.” You can use this option to find hits with two options for the company name, for example.
    • Use the next box down, to remove things you don’t want. For example if you don’t want plastic canvas you might put plastic and Pc here to exclude them.
    • There are more option in the advanced search, but I always ask for 200 items to be displayed on the page. Rarely, when looking for needlepoint, are there this many hits, so everything gets displayed on one page.
  6. Once you have your search refined, click search.
  7. The results will be displayed (or not). In either case, next to the number of hits is a link that says “save search.” This is the payoff. Click it.
  8. The search is saved to My eBay, so you’ll need to sign in.
  9. A pop-up window shows up on the search result page asking you to name the search and asking if you want email notification. Give it a name an ask for emails.

You’re done. The search can be found in my ebay under saved searches listed in alphabetical order.

The first email you get will have the results of the search you just did. But after that if an item is listed that meets your search you’ll get an email. First it tells you how many items (nice to know so you know how many you got. Then it lists all or some (depending on how many) of the items, with name, price at the time of the email, how many bids, and a link to the listing. For needlepoint things I rarely get more than ten and usually only one or two.

I look at the item description and if it looks good, I click on the listing to see a picture. I have several canvases that are no longer produced that I look for consistently. I’ve found many of them on eBay by using this technique.

I like it because it keeps me from wasting time and spending too much money buying random things on eBay.

Leigh Designs has two exciting bits of news. First off they have doubled their line of exciting Fash-inserts for the Lee nylon & Italian leather bags. That means there are now 10 designs in this series. Remember with these inserts you can switch them out as you like.

Leigh also has a great new series of canvases, Staccato. They are bright and bold contemporary florals with black interlocking rings on a white background. There are eight 12″ square designs in the series.

Associated Talents is adding a bunch of new small items in their trademark colorful style. These include a bunch of new micro mini socks, some great Halloween ‘candy corn’ (I’d love to see these finished), five fantastic Halloween characters with wide colorful borders, acorns, and, my favorite, a set of Advent skirt panels.

Rainbow Gallery doesn’t have any new threads, but is adding new colors to several of their most popular lines. There are 20 new colors of Silk Lame (for 13 mesh) and 17 of Silk Lame Braid (for18 mesh). PLease note that not all of these are the same colors. There is also a new color of Rainbow Linen, five new colors of Neon Rays + and one new Neon Rays. In addition there are six new Shaded Very Velvet colors, available in both sizes. They include some great colors: sands, oranges, pinks, and periwinkles.

I’m most excited about their new glow-in-the-dark Neon Rays +. It looks white under regular light. I’ve got a Halloween canvas this will be perfect for and so I can’t wait to try it.

Eye Candy has several new painted canvases out. New to needlepoint are the Humbug pincushions (the Halloween one is delightful). This shape is popular in the cross stitch world, according the Ada, the designer, but she has adapted it to needlepoint. It’s big enough do you could stuff it with shot and make it s frsmeweight.

I last week’s post about new products, I let you know about this charted needlepoint, Cleopatra’s Eyes. It’s designed by Kurdy Biggs of Threedles and, as you can see, won a first place ribbon at Woodlawn. Another piece of hers, Looking Glass, won an honorable mention.

The Scarlet Thread has Looking Glass available now and will be carrying Cleopatra’s Eyes. They had a delightful interview of Kurdy on their blog earlier this week.

You can also see Kurdy’s charming designs on her own site, Threedles.

Did you know that I have a free question and answer service called Ask Janet? There you can ask about anything except specific stitch suggestions and I’ll answer you, for free, usually within 48 hours.

I love to dig out the answers for you. Along with the more usual questions about canvases and basic needlepoint questions, I’ve helped:

  • people identify tghe technique on old needlework
  • identify a thread used in fly tying
  • helped a novelist with facts for his detective novel

and tons more.

Remember that the service is free. If I can’t help, I’ll try to send you to other resources who can.

Just remember if you have a needlepoint question, Ask Janet.

Weeks Dye Works has updated and redesigned their website.

The site features drop down menus for their products. For each type of product there are great clear pictures and a listing of links to their different color, laundry care, and order forms, all in PDF format.

There is also information about their history, a FAQ, and a listing of retail shops. I love their designer section of the site. There you can find a list (with thumbnail pictures) of free patterns from different designers featuring Weeks products. There is also a listing of designers using their products, information about their designer program and more.

For retailers there is a link to a credit application and a password-protected area for customers.

All in all, this would be close to a perfect thread site if they would make on-line color cards and switch from white-on-black to the more traditional black-on-white.

I’m working on a new concept in needlepoint kits that will, most likely, appear over the summer. I’m in the process of designing them, so it will be at least a month until they will be ready to go to the modelstitchers.

Modeltitchers have important jobs. First off, the model needs to be stitched well, so that it can be used for the cover photo, Second, in the case of a kit, the modelstitcher needs to keep track of how much thread is used. Finally, the modelstitcher needs to let the designer or stitch guide writer know when something doesn’t work or isn’t clear, so the instructions can be corrected.

The designs are on the small side, 5×7 or less, and will be on either 14 or 18 mesh canvas. Modelstitchers need to be good stitchers and able to complete this project within a month.Materials are provided to the stitchers, but you are not paid. You will, however, get to keep the model once photography is complete.

If you are interested in the job, please use the contact form to get in touch with me. I will contact you with specific questions about your needlepoint experience and will need to see examples of your stitching. If you have had experience doing models for a shop or designer, please let me know.

Thanks for your help.
