Welcome, Crafters, to our spookiest month of the year, where fun, creepy, and tasty-treat crafts abound. Of course the October theme is Halloween, and do we have a lot in store for you!

Mummies.jpg
Easy Halloween Mummy

You've probably already noticed our head start on Halloween posts, like the Easy Halloween Mummy and Candy Corn Cupcakes. But now we'll be adding lots of Halloween exclusive projects. Some will land on the side of "tricks," including a spinning bat toy, wearable brain cap, pair of braided black cat ears, and ghoulish window silhouettes to haunt up your house (just for starters!).

Others will fall into the "treat" and sweeter side of things, such as a sun-bleached pumpkin shirt, festive Halloween bunting (by Vanessa Coppola, shown at the top), candy corn creatures, and a candy tote to put all of your goodies in.

But that's not all!! This is also the month of our CRAFT/MAKE Halloween CONTEST! We'll have four categories: Costumes, Decor, Props, and Food. Keep your eyes peeled for the gory details, coming soon...

Happy Halloween!

Stitch your Stash Reminder

Fall is upon us and, if you’re anything like me, you are itching to do some stitching.

I’m anxious to stitch up many of the small projects in my stash and so I’m announcing a program/contest running from now until December 21 and the start of winter.

You need to register to participate and everyone who does will get some kind of prize. Prizes include thread packs, books, coupons good for my ebooks, discounts on classes and more.

Here’s how it works. If you want to participate, contact me to register. Just for signing up this week you’ll get a 25-point bonus, signups after Sept 26 get only a 10 point bonus.

The goal is to finish projects that are under 10″ square. For each registered piece you finish, you’ll get points. Points will be totaled prizes awarded after December 21.

For each registered piece you’ll get:

  • 5 points for registering it
  • 5 points if it was a UFO from your stash (must send scan to show it as UFO)
  • 5 points if you only used stash threads to complete it
  • 10 points for every completed piece (must send scan to show it stitched
  • 10 points if you frame or finish it
  • 15 points (plus project points) if you enroll in one of my classes for Art Needlepoint

These can be projects from anywhere: guild programs, UFO’s, presents — whatever. I have some new stuff that will be announced in the next few months and you’ll get extra points for signing up for them within a specific period.

I’m putting together some fabulous gifts for the top five point totals, but everyone who registers and completes one project will get a prize.

I’m taking this on as a challenge to myself as well and I’ll let you know how I’m doing.

Challenge to Finish Small UFO’s

While I’m doing better at getting rid of my stash, it still bothers me that there is so much thread around here. And I think, no matter how small or large the stash is, it can nag at you.

So I want to issue you a challenge for using up your thread stash.

I want you to take threads from your stash at random. Pick up to 50 different colors and threads.

Completely at random. Completely. Don’t try to compose anything while you pick.

I’m thinking that I’m going to ask someone to do this for me, since I can’t help composing.

Add to this one thread that is going to outline everything.

Put them in an opaque bag (not a clear one).

Make a diamond-shaped grid on your choice of canvas any size you like. Do this by drawing diagonal lines every 10 threads throughout the area.

I have a small Stirling tote that’s been sitting around for ages waiting for some stitching, so I’m going to do that using 13 mesh canvas.

Every other diamond will be one of your stash threads. The other diamonds will be a background color chose after all the diamonds are stitched.

Pick two stitches. One will be for your scrap patches. The other will be for your background patches.

Pick a thread from the bag at random. Stitch one diamond in this thread using the first stitch you picked.

When this is completed, put that thread back in the bag and pull out another thread. Stitch another block and repeat the process until all the blocks are filled.

Now looking at your stash, pick a thread for the background (it’s OK to buy a thread for this one).

Here’s the challenge part. The challenge will be open until June 15. Once you’ve stitched your piece, send me a scan. You’ll be entered into the competition. I’m going to put up a gallery of submissions and folks can vote for their favorites.

There will be prizes for the top vote getters.

The most popular (voting will close July 15) will win a fabulous prize.
