christmas-gift

Carol’s Counted Canvaswork has this simply delightful free pattern for a Christmas Star. It’s tiny 1.5″ square, so it will be really quick to stitch up.

And you can stitch it in so many different colors.

What a delightful little piece.

See her post for the charts and instructions.

bargello needlepoint christmas ornament

My friend Althea, who has the wonderful blog about Bargello needlepoint, has a special treat for us the next six Mondays. She has designed six Bargello Christmas theme ornaments which will appear on her blog for downloads.

There is one ornament each week and it is only available during that week. The current blog post has pictures of the first three patterns. The first one, Bargello Christmas Lights, is pictured above. I just love the way she has taken a very traditional pattern and given it a new twist.

I can’t wait until tomorrow!

A Reason to Look Forward to Mondays (at least for awhile)

For many of us, stitching Christmas items is something we do all year long. We have been putting up our tree this week and it got me thinking about my very unfocused method of getting ornaments and doing Christmas needlepoint.

You know those folks who think you should have a color theme for your Christmas decorations? Or a particular type of ornament? Or even coordinated wrapping paper? They avoid our house.

My husband complains that there is too much red in the wrapping paper, so when I go out I buy mostly green and silver.

I edit ornaments as I unwrap them and try not to have more than two of the same kind.

But even so, I do have areas where I collect Christmas needlepoint. My biggest collection is mini-socks. I have stitched and had about 50 finished. I have about 30 in the stash to stitch and five waiting to be finished, I could decorate a tree with them, but instead they hang from garlands on the stars.

Oh and I’m working on one now.

I have six snowflake ornaments made a long time ago. And several Designing Women crosses on plastic canvas on the Jesus tree. Our new Jesus tree is bigger, so I think I need to make some more.

I only have one or two Holy Family or saint needlepoints, so I need to add some there.

But I also have Christmas trees and look for more of them these days.

I don’t have Santas, mittens, sweaters, or snowmen, but you might.

And if you don’t want seasonal pieces you might look for geometrics or Kelly Clark’s wonderful pear series, or . . .

Christmas is a great time to show off your needlepoint collection.

Noodle Tags from Jen Funk-Weber

My friend Jen Funk-Weber is currently showcasing a number of small projects that you can finish in time for Christmas giving.

I’m delighted by this clever idea for making dangling needlepoint gift tags, she calls “Noodle Tags.”

It’s a creative way to use up small pieces of canvas you’d normally throw away and to use threads from your stash. The linked tutorial has stitch diagrams and instructions as well as pictures of some other tags.

Only have white canvas? You could color it with paint, a stamp pad, or fabric markers. Or, as one of her tags does, you could sew it to some colored felt or leave it white and use a bright thread.
I simply love this idea for a clever little gift.

Make the Tag the Gift with this Needlepoint

In December it seems as if everywhere you go you need a gift. Maybe your guild has a gift exchange, maybe you need a quick gift for a friend or your kid’s teacher, or maybe you are making your own Christmas Wish List. All December I’m going to be devoting Nuts about Needlepoint to gift ideas.

Some of these are useful tools you can make yourself to give as charming gifts to other stitchers. Some will be reviews of books and other items you can add to your list, still others will be reviews and instructions for products and projects that can be finished quickly to make delightful personal presents for anyone.

When I find great items on the Web that could be used as gifts, I’ll point them out as well.

And there will be a few surprises as well.

My friend, Anne Stradal, has posted some pictures of two of her delightful Eggs for All Seasons in Christmas colors on her blog, The Cape Stitcher.

I wanted to share this eye candy with you. If you want to see more of this delightful series, pictures of all of them are on her website. If you haven’t been there for awhile, there are some new ones.

I’m thinking maybe these would be a fund monthly series for next year!

Don’t forget to download Althea’s wonderful Christmas Lights ornament pattern. It’s only available this week, so hurry.

I just printed out my instructions and they have everything you need in a lovely format. The instructions are clear, finishing instructions are included, ad it uses floss for the many colors in the ornament.

I just love it and will probably go out and buy floss for it today. My floss stash is tiny and I’ve got to stitch this one. And soon.

initial monogram bargello needlepoint pattern free

It’s not hard at all to make a personalized box top insert with a Bargello background. Because you create the initial using your own word processor, you can make it any style.

I chose Cooper Black, a rounded, curvy, and bold font.

To make the boxtop you will need:

  • 14 mesh mono canvas two inches bigger than the box opening
  • 1 skein dark thread in color of your choice (I used Silk & Ivory in midnight)
  • 1 skein each two shades of same color (i.e. light and dark) – these do not need to be the same thread
  • 1 box with opening in top to fit needlework

Begin by tracing out the opening on you canvas with a permanent marker made for fabric.

On your word processor, find a font you like and type in the initial at about the scale you want (72 points generally make an inch, though this isn’t true for all fonts). You will probably have to scale it up or down. Put your canvas with the outline over it to check on the size.

Trace the letter onto the center of the canvas and color it in with a dark marker made for fabric.

When dry. stitch the initial with the dark marker in either Basketweave or a textured stitch (I used Nobuko).

two color diamond needlepoint bargello pattern

The Bargello pattern I used, pictured above, is a diamond pattern which only uses two shades. The outline color is also the center stitch. Patterns like this are easy to compensate and subtle enough to make a wonderful background for the initial.

When complete, follow the finishing instructions to put it into the box.

The instructions, including a finished picture of the box will also be available on All about Needlepoint.

This pattern is one that will be in my new Bargello book, Little Bargello Treasures, out in the fall. It will also be a model at the Maker Faire.

pattern from 2010 Bargello Challenge

Bargello Needlepoint has just undergone a major redesign to make it easier to find patterns and to learn about both Bargello & needlepoint. It’s a great site and you should spend plenty of time there.

This year Althea, the site’s owner, has been trying to stitch a new Bargello pattern everyday in the 2010 Bargello Challenge. With half the year gone, she has an impressive array of patterns stitched. These she has classified in useful pages, like the Bargello Diamond Designs that give a brief descrption of this type of design and then show all of the designs in this category in clickable thumbnails. Click on one and you’ll find a page with a bigger picture, information about the source and some other information about the design.

Besides this amazing resource and record of her project, there is also a store with her ebook of ornaments, links to buy printed books, fun merchandise, and several free downloads.

Two other areas of reference information classified by subject provide a comprehensive index to her blog material. They are Bargello Boot Camp and Needlepoint How-to. Both are great places for exploration.

This is one of the cleanest designed and useful needlepoint sites I’ve seen in a very long time.

metropolitan museum of art nativity

Though my big nativity isn’t nearly so complex, my DH did buy me new figures, a new shop and cart for the town and a chicken coop. It’s gotten so big we are considering leaving it up year-round.

May your Christmas be wonderful, blessed, fun and full or good food.

And maybe even some stitching.

Thanks for being a supporter of this blog!
