Twinchy framed in Just Nan WhimZi

If you’ve been participating in the Twinchy Challenge, you’re probably like me, on the lookout for things to do with them.

These charming frames from Just Nan called WhimZis are delightful and so easy to use to frame needlepoint.

As you can see from the picture above, it’s a perfect size for a little bit or needlepoint.

To finish, just cut your needlepoint to fit the little piece of cardboard included in the frame. If your needlepoint has an open background, you should probably color the cardboard so it doesn’t remain gray.

Put the needlepoint onto the cardboard and slide it into the frame. Return the velvet backing board to its place, adjust and you’re done!

How easy is that?

WhimZis come in several different finishes, some embossed, and there are many designs which include seasonal charms.

This is a great product to finish needlepoint!

I often stitch at night while we watch TV. Sometimes my DH doesn’t like the light on, so off goes the light and thus my stitching ends for the evening.

But not now. With the Beam N Read LED Light, I can stitch without any other lights and see my needlepoint just fine.

I tested both the 3 and 6 light sizes. They run on AA batteries (included with the 3 light size but not with the 6) and hang around your neck with a webbing strap.

I found that while the 3 light size was just fine when using the unfiltered light, the 6 light size was far too bright when unfiltered; brighter than the regular light I use.

The lights come with filters as well. The 3 light comes with a dark pink filter for night vision. I found that it worked well, making things nicely clear at night. While the colors of my needlework were not true, the contrast was good.

The 6 light comes with two different filters, shown in the picture, one red and one yellow. I loved the yellow filter. When I used it, my DH didn’t even know that I had a light on and I could stitch in comfort.

I didn’t like the red filter much at all, I felt as if it left things too dark for the kind of fine details needlepoint requires.

The 6 light also comes with a magnifier which I didn’t try.

he only fault I could find was in the strap. One side came undone almost immediately. I tried rethreading, and even tying it on, but nothing works for more than a few minutes. As a result, I just rest it on my chest.

These lights, in either size, will be great additions to your needlepoint tool kit.

Please note: These lights were provided to me by the manifacturer for review purposes.

Timeless Totes has come out with their first self-finishing product and it’s a real winner.

The clutch is made of high-quality leather or suede in several colors. It has a magnet clasp for the flap and a lovely double-ended brass zipper. Open the asymmetrical flap and inside there is an open pocket. The purse is lined in high-quality satin.

It’s just about the best made leather good for self-finishing I’ve seen.

And it is also the best for self-finishing as well. The area for needlework is sewn around with stitching about 1/4″ beyond the open area. This creates a firm border for the needlework and makes it easy to know if you have trimmed your needlework enough.

The adhesive film is covered with paper, thoughtfully cut into three pieces. This makes it easy to remove without tearing, a problem I often have with other products.

The adhesive is really strong, so place your needlework carefully on the exposed film. Then lift the sides and tuck in the edges.

With other self-finishing projects, I felt I could always remove the needlework easily and replace it with another piece, but this needlework isn’t going anywhere.

The Timeless Totes clutch is a wonderful product.

Bizzi Creations (http://www.bizzicreations.com/) has recently come out with a line of
lovely wooden boxes. Because of their deep openings they work well for needlepoint.

The boxes come in four sizes. 44 and 1.25 squares, 46 rectangles, and a rectangular
box with three 1.25 squares. The boxes come in a variety of colors from classic (black
and white). to bright (pink, yellow and lime), and new neutrals (dark blue and red).

They are beautifully finished inside and out with finished particle board to hold the
needlepoint in place.

Unlike many other boxes on the market, the Bizzi Creations box includes a variety of items
to insure your needlework looks perfect inside the box. Want to protect the needlework
from spills? There’s a piece of glass included. Finishing thinner fabrics (like punchneedle
or cross stitch) several pieces of cardboard are included to make a tight fit.

From start to finish this box reflects thought, care, and quality. It’s one of the best
around.

Finishing is often a problem for stitchers. Show me a stitcher and I’ll show you the boxes (yes, usually more than one) of stitched but not finished objects (anyone have a better name for these?).

I think I spend much of my life looking for things which can be finished easily. You probably do too. Here’s a round up of what I’ve found so far.

Tapis-tree (http://www.tapis-tree.com), Carolyn Barrani’s needlework company, has
created one of the most innovative ideas I’ve seen in self-finishing. Carolyn makes velvet
bags, boots, and Christmas stockings, with ribbon trim which can hold finished
needlepoint. The velvet items are sold with hand-painted canvases to match.

Stitch the canvas, block and trim. Insert it into the opening, blindstitch the edges and
your are done.

There are two small bags, square and rectangular, four sizes of tote bags, along with
stockings and boots for Christmas. The array of canvases available for the bags and totes
includes a variety of stained glass designs, mosaic initials, single flowers (very cool) and
mosaic vegetables. All are painted beautifully and are easy to stitch. If you are looking for
a scrap bag project, the mosaic designs feature a background which can be done in
several threads in the same color.

The velvet bags and totes come in over 15 different colors. Denim has newly been added
to the line of bags.

The Christmas stockings provide a wonderful solution for stitchers looking for timeless
and elegant religious designs. The canvases are small and are inserted into lovely
stockings. Attached to the stocking is a velvet name tag. Finished the same way, you
supply the canvas and thread to customize the stocking. This is one stocking you could
start two weeks before Christmas and expect to have a finished heirloom in time for
Christmas morning.

I love these bags and stockings. Carolyn has created a real winner here combining great
design and self-finishing into one lovely package.

needlepoint mini patchwork star on black and white zweigart canvas, designed by janet perry

black & white canvas in action

As I stitched this little quilt block on Zweigart’s black and white canvas one word kept coming to mind — hard.

This canvas is tweeded. One direction has black threads, the other white. While the individual threads are the same as mono canvas, the woven effect is not and therein lies the problem. As you an see from the picture the white threads are more prominent.

While that is not a bad thing for the finished effect it makes stitching and counting extremely difficult. I felt as if the holes in the canvas “melted” into the white threads. And, although I counted threads and the stitches are correct, much of the time I felt as if my stitches were not true.

Add to this the problem that you can’t put a dark cloth or a light cloth under it to see and you have a canvas not for the faint of heart.

Even so, the finished effect is wonderful, so I would seek out painted canvases thaat use it as the background.
