The word ‘yarn’ probably conjures up a laundry list of thoughts and activities, depending on who you are. Perhaps it even provokes feelings of wonder any mystery. To some, yarn is associated with childhood or camp, where crafts always included this fuzzy textile. To others, it is the beautiful, ivory sweater that their grandmother knitted for Christmas. Regardless of how old you are, or where you’re from, the multifaceted nature of yarn can surely provide a sense of warmth and comfort to even the most unsuspecting characters.

Each March the National Assembly of Needlearts hosts their annual assembly. It’s held at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. Only members of NAN can attend (although anyone can be a friend of NAN).

There are two-, four-, and half-day classes during the Assembly. There will be classes by Shay Pendray , Toni Gerdes, Terry Dryden, and others. One highlight each year is the Lifetime Acheivement Award. This year Debbie Stiehler is the honoree.

Another highlight of the Assembly is The Exemplary, an outstanding needlework show. Unlike many other needlework shows, entries with glass are permitted, but they must be delivered in person.

There are separate categories for amateur and professional and several technique categories including Mixed Media and Japanese Embroidery.

There are several special awards as well. At the time of entry you may specify if the work is for sale, if you want a written critique ($25), or if it is an entry the Challenge (this year’s theme is America the Beautiful)

You must include an artist’s statement with each entry. Fees are $20 for the first entry, $15 for second and subsequent, and $25 for multi-piece entries.

Learn more at NAN’s site.
