Robert Sorby 45186 Shear Scrapers

Shear scraping is a recently enhanced method of woodturning which relies on the presentation of the scraper at a shear angle. The technique offers some significant advantages over conventional scrapers.
45° Shear Scrapers - The 3/8'' square shank sits firmly on the tool rest and presents the cutter at a 45° angle to the workpiece when used in either direction. This is due to the unique cutter seating position. Each tip can be re-positioned several times before re-sharpeining becomes necessary. At the optimum angle of 45°, the slicing action is safer and produces a superior finish. Sanding is often unnecessary. The risk of the cutter digging-in is virtually eliminated.

Robert Sorby Hollowmaster

The Robert Sorby Hollowmaster has a flat underside which provides exceptional control and stability when hollowing and is suitable for end grain and bowl work. It is supplied with two interchangeable tips for hollowing and scraping.
Unlike most conventional hollowing tools, the unique Hollowmaster comes with a meaty 3/4'' flat surface. When laid on the tool rest, this gives ample support to prevent the tool from being turned over by the rotation of the wood. You are not fighting the laws of nature but removing wood with ease. It's swan neck design means that the Hollowmaster can reach those spots that are often difficult to reach. The Hollowmaster comes with a swiveling hollowing cutter and a full round scraper cutter for fine finishing. Both are easily sharpened with a diamond file and can be replaced when need be.Sorby Hollowmaster Instructions

Robert Sorby Oval Skew Chisel

Delicately balanced tools that are the planes of the spindle turners kit. Designed at Robert Sorby, the profile allows the tool to glide effortlessly along the tool rest without fear of the edges dragging on the rest. They will smooth cylinders, clean the end grain of spindles, cut shallow curves, beads, pummels and v-cuts, e.g. stair balustrade and chair legs. These tools are indispensable if a fine finish is required from the tool.

Robert Sorby Parting Tools

Standard Parting Tool - Used to part the finished project off from the waste material, the parallel sides make for a rigid tool that handles well. The 1/8" -3mm tool reduces the amount of waste, vital if the timber is an expensive, exotic one. It also makes for a fine detailing tool, e.g. beads and fillets.
Diamond Parting Tool - The special profile of this tool reduces the risk of binding in the cut. It also reduces the amount of heat build up caused by friction, thereby lessening the chance of burning the bottom of the parted project.
Fluted Parting Tool - This tool has a milled flute running along the bottom edge, creating two sharp spurs at the cutting face. These sever the fibers to produce a burnished finish. The tapered profile also reduces the risk of binding in the cut. Robert Sorby Spindlemaster

Taming the skew is perhaps the most common of problems encountered by the woodturner. The digs-ins which ensue from incorrect presentation cause many turners to avoid using the skew chisels and consequently reduce their skills and limit their opportunities of turning between centres. The new Spindlemaster does away with this problem. Its design is flat on one surface, and the oval on the other making dig-ins a thing of the past. It is easy to use for even the least experienced turner. In addition to doing the regular planning job of the skew chisel, the Spindlemaster will also cut both beads and coves with the greatest ease. The Spindlemaster gives a fine finish every time. That is a particular advantage when working on soft woods like pine which normally leave a very coarse finish.
Micro Spindlemaster - Since it's introduction, the Spindlemaster has become the favorite tool of many turners. That is not surprising when you consider it's advantages - it has no corners to dig in, it planes, beads, coves and trims end grain, and it's polished bevel gives a superb finish from the tool especially on softer woods. Now this micro version has been introduced with all the same advantages. That makes it ideal for those specializing in miniature work, bobbin makers and pen turners. The Spindlemaster is ideal for small projects like boxes and rattles, and works just as effectively on large pieces like bedposts and staircase spindles. If you have reservations about using a skew chisel, the Spindlemaster is the answer. Sorby Sandmaster

As the disc is spinning it also reduces the clogging of the abrasive. The Sandmaster comes complete with a Velcro covered 2" sponge pad which allows for the easy changing of abrasive discs. A variety of grits - from 60 - 400 - of aluminum oxide disc can then be quickly attached. The adjustable head which runs on a durable phosphor bronze bushing lets the turner reach even the more inaccessible spots. As an optional extra, a 3" head and discs can be easily fitted for greater efficiency. The Sandmaster becomes an even more versatile tool when the head is removed and replaced by a pigtail mandrel and goblet or bowl mop. Made of fine grade cotton these mops are an ideal medium for buffing waxes and other finishes. Maintenance and use instructions for the Sandmaster.
