HandApplied Finishes

by Jeff Jewitt
A well-applied finish can add the crowning touch to any piece of furniture, yet finishing is a skill that many woodworkers find difficult to master. Most people erroneously assume that flawless finishes have to be sprayed on or that there's some trick to achieving perfect results. The truth is that superb finishes have been produced for years using simple tools like brushes and pads. This book takes you through the steps necessary to apply finishing materials by hand, detailing each process, the materials used, and the correct technique.
You'll learn how to set up a safe and suitable working environment, how to prepare the surface of the wood for finishing, and how to choose the right stain to color the wood. At the core of the book are step-by-step techniques for six classic hand-applied finishes: shellac (including French polishing), oil, varnish, lacquer, water-based finish, and milk paint. Each technique is clearly and concisely explained, with many sharp photos and detailed drawings to accompany the text.
Whatever your skill level, this book will serve as the ultimate reference manual for protecting and beautifying furniture with finishes applied by hand.
Winner of the 1998 Stanley Award for Best How-To Book!

Making Plywood Drawers

If you can build a case for your drawers then you can build drawers -- theyÆre both box-building exercises. But, what kind of drawers should you build -- which joinery and what kind of mounting in the case? Gary Rogowski, noted furniture maker and teacher of woodworking in Portland, Oregon, shows you how to think and build your way through this problem.
YouÆll learn how to assemble plywood drawers (utility drawers for the shop and better-quality kitchen-cabinet-type drawers) made with: simple rabbet joints on the table-saw or router dado-rabbet joints drawer-lockö joints on the router
and mounted: with the "bottom-runner" method with center-glides in face-frame cabinets with side-mounted mechanical drawer glides
Making Rustic Furniture

There's a long American tradition of furniture made directly from raw twigs or sticks. American willow-twig furniture and the Adirondack style are well-known types. Paul Ruhlmann teaches and works in a style that's closer to Adirondack. He gathers saplings of red maple and buckthorn (he's does his New England environment a favor by culling these invasive trees), peels them, joins them (he's invented a tool that makes instant tenons on sticks), and finishes them simply. Ruhlmann makes all sorts of furniture, but especially beautiful chairs with refined Shaker lines and woven seats that have a bit of the frontier about them.
This video will teach you the entire process, including how to select the parts of your project from raw sticks and how to steam-bend posts when necessary; as well as making the joints, finishing and weaving.
